# Find the Imposter — Free Online Party Game for Friends

**Everyone gets the same word. Except one of you.**

Find the Imposter is a social deduction word game for 3 to 20 players. Everyone in the room is shown the same secret word — everyone except the imposter, who gets a decoy word instead, and often doesn't realise they're the odd one out. Players go around twice giving one-word clues, each trying to prove they know the word without handing it to the faker. Then everyone votes. Catch the imposter and the crew scores; let them slip through and they clean up. Even when they're caught, they get one last chance to name the real word and steal the round back. MindLoop runs it three ways: fully online with each player on their own device, same-room play where clues are spoken out loud and only the voting happens on phones, or pass-and-play on a single device passed around the table — no room code, no accounts, and no wifi worries. Hosts choose the round count, the word categories, and how cruel to be: the imposter can either receive a plausible decoy word to bluff with, or nothing at all beyond the category.

Category: Party Games. Free to host, no install, players join from any browser with a room code.

## Three ways to play

- **Pass & play** (One device) - One phone passed around the table. No room code, no sign-in, no app download, and it keeps working when the wifi does not. The pick for kitty parties, hostel rooms, and long train journeys. https://mindloop.space/imposter/local?new=1
- **Online** (Own devices) - Everyone on their own device, anywhere. Clues are typed and revealed together, so it works alongside a WhatsApp or Zoom call without anyone needing to unmute. https://mindloop.space/imposter/create?mode=online
- **Same room, own phones** (Hybrid) - You are all together but each on your own phone. Clues are said out loud across the table; only the secret ballot happens on screen. Built for classrooms and office team outings. https://mindloop.space/imposter/create?mode=same-room

## FAQ

### How do you play Find the Imposter?

Everyone is shown the same secret word except one player, the imposter, who sees a decoy word instead. Players take turns giving one-word clues about their word — twice around the group. All clues are then revealed and everyone votes on who they think the imposter is. If the imposter is caught, they get one chance to guess the real word and steal the round.

### Can we play with just one phone, at a kitty party or a college fest?

Yes. Pass and play mode runs the entire game on a single device that you hand around the table or the circle. Each player taps to privately reveal their word, then passes it on. Clues are said out loud and voting is done by passing the phone again. No account, no room code, no app download, and it keeps working if the wifi doesn't — which is what makes it work at kitty parties, college fests, hostel rooms, and family functions where only one person wants to set anything up.

### What games can we play with friends on a WhatsApp or Zoom video call?

Online mode is built for exactly that. Everyone opens the room code on their own phone or laptop while the video call stays running, and clues are typed rather than spoken — so nobody has to fight over who unmutes first, and a laggy call doesn't ruin the round. It uses very little data on top of the call itself because it is just a web page, not a second video stream.

### Is this a good party game for an office team outing?

It is one of the better ones, because it needs no props, no printing, and no facilitator. Same-room mode fits a team outing best: everyone is together, clues are argued out loud across the table, and only the voting happens privately on each person's phone. Rounds run 3–5 minutes, so it fills a slot without eating the whole afternoon, and it gets quiet people talking faster than a round of introductions does.

### How many players do you need?

At least 3 — one imposter and two people to disagree about them. It works well up to about 20. Rooms of 8 or more players get two imposters instead of one, so the crew still has a real chance of being fooled.

### Does the imposter know they're the imposter?

That's up to the host. In decoy mode they're simply shown a different word and are never told — so they may not realise until the clues stop lining up, which is often the funniest way to play. In blind mode they're told outright but see only the category, and have to bluff a clue from nothing.

### Is Find the Imposter free?

Yes. Pass-and-play needs no account at all. Hosting an online or same-room game is also free — you just sign in so results can count toward your group's leaderboard.

### What kinds of words are used?

Hundreds of curated word pairs across eight categories: animals, food, movies, sports, office, school, travel, and everyday objects. Pairs are always clearly different from one another — never near-synonyms — so a careful player can actually spot the mismatch instead of guessing at random.
